Breaking For America
The Challenge
Beautiful Breaking
Long time dancer, poet, technologist and GIRVIN client, Scott Oki, asked for a way to visualize breakdancing in a logo+typographic brand mark that would be distinct in the b-boy market and would integrate breaking into the character of the logotype.
The Solution
Spin to Win
Tim Girvin worked with Scott to listen to his inspirations and handcrafted a string of solutions, integrated with figures, graffiti-type lettering and typography, then GIRVIN drew a break-dancer in the rendering and this was finalized with bespoke GIRVIN support typography.
“
I’ve been working with Tim Girvin as a brand designer for decades. He listened to my ideas about this NFP effort that I was building as a charitable cause for this dance movement. We collaborated—he listened to my inspirations, and he knows about my own dance work. I had some ideas—and he brought them into the final design in a great way. This design works as a street savvy logo; it could be on our clothes, in the performances that we create, and digital. It’s really about sharing, his listening and our collaborating; it’s a legacy in our creative efforts, many brands, many years.”
